RANET-Kenya Project

The Kenya Meteorological Department has been in the process of establishing the RANET-Kenya Project since December 2001. We have 4 community FM radio stations so far on air and have established more than 22 RANET Information centers.

In these centers, it is now possible to receive, information in web format without the necessity of the services of Internet Service Provider (ISPs), weather, climate, health and other developmental information at rural based areas. This is made possible through the use of Worldspace digital receivers connected to computers through a worldspace pc adaptor.

(I) These Information Centers are:

Eldoret- Kenya meteorological Department (KMD), Matuga- Kenya Agricultural Resaerch Institute (KARI), Embu-KARI, Embu-KMD, Embu- National Agricultural and Livestock Extension Programme (NALEP), Nairobi-World Vision, Nairobi-KMD, Machakos-KARI, Mombasa-KMD, Garissa-KMD, Kisumu-KMD, Nyeri_NALEP, Kisumu-NALEP, Kakamega-NALEP, Nakuru- NALEP. Lodwar-KMD, etc

Each of these information centers have a computer, worldspace receiver radio and a worldspace pc adaptor for downloading information from worldspace satellite.

(II) We have 4 operational community FM radio stations in:

Suswa , Kangema, Budalangi and Kwale

(III) We are in the process of setting up 2 more community radios at:

Bunyore, Nyando

(IV) We have permits for 3 extra places:

Baringo, Machakos
