Kenya Meteorological Department's RANET-Kenya project is proceeding with setting up Rural community FM radio stations in various parts of the country. So far, KMD has 4 community FM radio stations on air. These are OLMAA RANET FM broadcasting at 89.3Mhz in Suswa, Narok, KANGEMA RANET FM broadcasting at 106.5Mhz BULALA RANET FM broadcasting at 107.5Mhz in Budalangi and KWALE RANET FM broadcasting at 103.5Mhz in Kwale. Other areas expected to have the radio stations includes Wajir, Nyando, and Bunyole.
The radio stations are run and managed jointly by the community in which they are set up and stake holders who include Kenya Meteorological Department as facilitators, local administration and local NGOs. The radios stations are donated by NOAA and are made by Wantok Enterprises of Canada. They can be powered either by solar energy or electricity from main grid. The radios stations comes with a transmitter of 50 watts or 100 watts and are able to broadcast at radius of 25 km or more from the mast. The radio station broadcast in local languages to ensure the information is understood by all especially the elderly and the young. Most of the staff working in these radio stations are volunteers, those who have retired and young people trained in media.
