Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD)

The Weather Studio

The most significant breakthrough in the KMD's PWSP was the acquisition of the electronic weather studio with chroma-key technology through a generous donation of the UK meteorological office via the VCP of WMO in August 1995. This studio has greatly improved the status/visibility of the department in addition to generating interest in the information and services that the department offers. Inevitably the weather forecasts have improved greatly as KMD faces up to the challenge from a more interested and hence demanding audience. Using the computers the production meteorologists in the department have been able to freely develop attractive and relevant graphics for the television weather presenters. The use of illustrative graphics developed by professional meteorologists has helped the department to communicate more effectively with the viewers. It is therefore not surprising that a few months after the studio became operational, commercial sponsors were already willing to sponsor the weather Programme on TV.

All weather broadcasts in Kenya are associated with the news and hence enjoy a wide audience. We expect that soon all the radio and television stations in the country will be receiving weather forecasts directly from KMD and in fact there have been suggestions to have the weather forecasts broadcasted on radio in the local dialects which KBC offers.
