COURSES

by The
Institute for Meteorological Training and Research, (IMTR), Nairobi Introduction.
Throughout
Africa, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, Information Technology and Computer
Literacy is generally inadequate. It is recognized that this shortcoming is
mainly due to non-availability or lack of practical training in the
region. To address this problem, the Institute for Meteorological Training and
Research (IMTR), initiated a Compute
Application Course in order to improve the capacity
of Kenyans and people in the East African region at large, to make
practical use of information and communications technologies (ICT),
so as to benefit from the opportunities emerging from the digital
revolution. The
Computer Application Course is both Regular and tailor made course. The Regular
course consists of 5 compulsory modules namely: - Introduction
to computers (10hrs),
Operating System (Windows), MS
Word (30hrs), MS excel (20hrs),
and Communication-Internet & email
(10hrs).
Participants
who require specific modules tailored to their needs have the option of choosing
from a variety of modules as shown below under Course Modules.
Objectives The
course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants in
computer applications. Target
group
The
course is intended for University graduates, Pre-University students, Corporate
institution employees, Trainers, Individuals, and School Children and School
Leavers. The course is offered both as part-time and full-time. Candidates for
this course should have at least secondary education or its equivalent. Facilities
There
is a well-equipped computer laboratory at the Institute
for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) where the computer courses
are conducted. Full board accommodation facilities at the institute’s hostel.
Location The
course is tenable at the WMO Regional Institute for Meteorological Training and
Research (IMTR), Nairobi.
The institute is located approximately nine kilometers from Nairobi City centre
at Dagorreti Corner, on Ngong Road. This is in a relatively quiet environment
on the outskirts of Nairobi. Course Modules The course combines
formal lectures, tutorials, practicals and simulated on-the-Job training. The
course comprises of: 1.

Data Management (DBMS): MS Access

Presentation : MS PowerPoint.

Programming. C++ and Visual BASIC

Qualifications The
minimum academic requirement is an Ordinary level Certificate or its equivalent.
Fluency in spoken and written English is essential, as it is the language of
instruction of the course.
