What is Climatological Data?
This is the data that is obtained from the meteorological
observatories and stored for future use.
The Processing
The processing of climatological data is carried out
in the following stages:
1. Collection
The data is obtained from the meteorogical
instruments located in meteorological
observatories distributed all over the country. The data is then tramsmitted
to the Meteorological Headquarters at Dagoretti Corner, Nairobi in monthly
or decadal durations. The transmission of data through postal, telephone,
or radio means.
2. Computer Data Entry
On reception the data is verified for any errors and
then entered into the computer. It is then verified for any errors that
may have occurred during the data entry operation.
3. Archival
Aftert the data have been certified to a truly record
of the observations made it is then stored offline for future use.
4. Retrieval
Whenever the stored data is required, there are avalable
programs to extract the selected data and output it in the desired format. |
Climatological Data Sets
Climatological Data falls under the following data sets:
1. Rainfall Data
Rainfall data is obtained from the rainfall
stations most of which are manned by the Meteorological Department
personnel and few others by voluntary organisations. Currently there are
about 2000 rainfall stations all over the country. The archived data goes
back from early 1900 to data.
2. Agrometeorological Data
There are Agrometeorological
stations all over the country that provide this type of data.
Agrometeorological data
includes the meteorological observations and agricultral oriented observations.
3.Synoptic data
This data set contains meteorological observations made
every 3 hours in synoptic
stations which are about 40 in total all over the country.
4. Upper air Data
This data is about the meteorological observations from
about 850Hp level up to about 100Hp level. The observations are made using
both radio sodes and pilot balloons. |
Users Of Climatological Data
Climatological data is used a lot in meteorological services.
However, due to importance of the information contained
in this data, it attracts many users outside the meteorological field.
The following the areas where this data is mostly used:
1. Research
2.Training
3.Agriculture
4.Construction industry
