Roles Of Computer Services
|
The Past
The
computer data processing operations started without computers. Data was
punched into cards. Institutions like the University of Nairobi were contracted
to transfer data from the pucnched card to the magnetic tapes. It was in
those magnetic tape that the data was archived in. When the first computer
(Mitra mini computer) was acquired with the periferals such as the
tape reader, card reader
and disk drives the transation was smoother than expected.
Now
The
main data processing operations have been automated. Computers are involved
in all stages of processing. Data entry, archival and retireval are carried
out through software that has been developed in-house.
In
Future
It
is expected that the data processing will be automated right from the collection
centres. The observatories will be equipped with computers where the data
will be entered immediately after the observation and then relayed to the
central database for verifications and archival. Thus the database will
always be up to date.
