The Counseling Unit envisions an excellent World Class Psychologically Healthy Forecasting Workforce that Provides Optimum Contribution to Improved Quality of Life.

 

Mission

To Facilitate and coordinate the development and implementation of HIV & AIDS programmes in prevention, control, treatment, care and support in the Kenya Meteorological Department

 

HIV and Aids Control Unit

 

Main Objective  

Reduce the spread of HIV and Improve the quality of life of those infected and affected at the workplace

 

Specific Objectives

(a)   Prevention of New infections

Ø  Increasing Awareness   and Access to Counseling and Testing (VCT)

Ø  Condom promotion- promote correct and consistent condom use

Ø  Behavior Change Communication (BCC) Programmes

Ø  Ensure prevention and Treatment Efforts are Mutually Supported (ART Information)

 

(b)Improvement of the Quality of Life of People Infected and Affected by HIV & Aids

Ø  Providing psychosocial support

Ø  Promoting access to  required services

Ø   Promoting Home Based Care

Ø  Reducing Stigma and Discrimination of infected and affected

Ø  Mainstreaming HIV & Aids at workplace 

Ø  Building capacity of PLWHA to advocate and protect their rights- promoting greater involvement of PLWHA in our programmes 

Ø  Enhance public awareness and advocacy  on HIV and Aids

 

 (d) Mitigation of Social and Economic Impact

Ø  Creating awareness on the impacts of HIV/Aids for comprehensive mitigation action among policy makers and general population.

Networking with other national and international stakeholders

 

Action Plan and Achieved Targets/milestones for the FY 2007 – 2008 

         VCT services-  13 days of mobile VCT with good attendance

         Advocacy/awareness creating- 3 family Open days, ASK Nairobi, WMD

         Seminars- held at Hqs, Central, Rift valley and Coast provinces

         Condom Uptake – 26,624 male condoms and 330 female condoms

         Support – for staff (infected and affected), post election violence

         Networks- internal, national and international activities

         Training-    3 officers were trained  

 

Plan for FY 2008-2009 

         Training- for contact persons at all stations (preferably all at leadership levels)

         Seminars – Reach out to all staff and especially in stations where the national prevalence is high ( Nyanza, Nairobi, Coast and Eastern)

         IEC materials-  develop and disseminate a newsletter/brochures/CD

         Participate- Trade Fair, CEO,s testing week, WAD, WMD,GHC (candlelight memorial)
